Parents, Families and Students of George Junior High School,
I want to let you know that we have updated our dress code for the 2023-24 school year. We felt there was far too much time spent out of class dealing with minor dress code infractions. Additionally, with only one female administrator, the division of labor in this area was extremely skewed between the three of us. With support and input from our district administration and the 2021-22 Principal’s Cabinet, composed of 97 students, we modified our dress code policy for 2022-23. This included allowing students to wear hats, but not hoods, and relaxing the strict standards that seemed to disproportionately target our female students. Unfortunately, we noticed an increase in inappropriate dress during this past year. Thus, we are modifying our dress code accordingly.
One of our greatest responsibilities as educators at this level is to prepare our students for entry into the professional world. This includes, but is not limited to, how they should dress based on the setting they find themselves in. Clothing that may be appropriate in social settings outside of school may not be appropriate at school or in a workplace environment. We will not allow males or females to wear clothing that is overly revealing. That includes midriff shirts, too short shorts or skirts, tank tops, tube tops and sports bras. We will also not allow students to wear these things and cover them with jackets. We’ve found that, more often than not, students take the jackets off when they think no adult is paying attention. Students found to be out of dress code will check out appropriate, school owned clothing to wear for the day and leave their inappropriate clothes in the office. They will also be assigned after school detention. This will allow for students to not miss instruction time due to dress code violations. We are hoping that by getting information out early, this will allow students and families time to plan their wardrobes accordingly.
Also, hoodies may be worn, but hoods may NOT be worn in the building. This is not a new rule. Rather, we will enforce it differently this year. If a student wears a hood in the building, he or she will be warned once to take it off. If they violate again, the hoodie will be confiscated and parents/guardians will be notified to come pick the hoodie up and the student will not be allowed to wear a hoodie again. Here is a slideshow (in 3 languages) that gives examples of what is and isn’t acceptable to wear to school or school events for the 2023-24 school year.

JustServe is a website and App that connects volunteers with service projects in their community. It is a platform to help individuals find opportunities to give back and serve others in the community. Having student leaders who are committed to promoting community service and encouraging their peers to get involved can be instrumental in the success of the club. These student leaders can bring fresh ideas, creativity, and enthusiasm that can inspire more students to participate in community service through JustServe. For the inaugural year of this club, Natali Romero will be serving as the President, Daniella Calderon as the Vice President, and Jaelyn Burris will serve as one of the secretaries to help direct students in this initiative. #DestinationGeorge
